Johnson also took an active role in mitigating the effects of the Newark lead crisis, assisting in the distribution of clean water to affected residents.

In 2022, Johnson made a bid as a Democrat for the position of 5th ward city councilman. Although his campaign was unsuccessful, he remained steadfast in his convictions and did not let this deter him from his path of public service.
